Aufbau Ost is a colloquial term for the Wirtschaftsförderung Ost, by means of which the economic system of the former East Germany is being brought into line with the demands of the social market economy. Using funds from the Solidaritätszuschlag, the Federal Government seeks to subsidize investment in the East, to develop infrastructure and to support research, environmental conservation and the creation of new businesses.
